Pourewa Valley Restoration

The Pourewa Valley urban forest is neglected and overgrown. We spent a day volunteering with NZ Forest & Bird to clear out rubbish, lay pest control bait and support the the forest’s restoration.

Description

The Pourewa Valley urban forest is one of the last untouched forests in Auckland. It is an important historical site for both local Māori iwi and European settlers. Over the years, it has been left neglected, overrun with rubbish and invasive species. Things are changing, with locals banding together to control pests and restore the area to it’s native state, while a walkway is planned for all New Zealanders to enjoy. In January 2020, the Be team got together with NZ Forest and Bird to donate a day of our time working through the scrub to clear out rubbish. We collected several rubbish bags of rubbish, some of it many decades old. Our hopes are to continue supporting the volunteers to return this site of promise to its former natural glory.
